Where to donate to people who've lost their homes in the LA fires
Across LA County, nearly 2,000 structures have been destroyed
Hi! I apologize to have broken my “once weekly” rule this early into our run here, but I have been completely torn up about the fires across LA County. I live in New York now, but I have spent quite a bit of time on the westside of LA, where my partner’s family lives, for almost a decade. They lost their home in the Palisades fire. I used to live on the east side in Highland Park, quite near Altadena and Pasadena, which have also been hit by fire. Across the county, some of my favorite places in Los Angeles have burned to the ground. The list of friends of friends who have lost their homes is only getting longer.
A city is only as vibrant as the people in it and many Los Angeles residents are preparing to completely rebuild their lives right now. There’s only so much we can do from afar (and, to say the least, when climate change, faulty government, and mismanagement of resources are to blame here) but I want to do what I can to make things easier for those who’ve lost their homes.
There are so, so, so, so many more to include here, but I hope that this is helpful for anyone who is looking for a place to send money. I have not included GoFundMe pages that have already surpassed their goal here and I’ll do my best to trim the list and update accordingly as others surpass their goal and new GoFundMe pages are listed.
This is intended to be an evolving document. If you have friends or family who have been affected by the fires who are crowdfunding, please share their GoFundMe pages with me via this Google Form. Since I am fielding many messages as this post spreads, I warmly request that you check if the link you’re sharing is already on the list before you send it. Not a huge deal, but this way I will have more time to dedicate to getting unshared GFMs on the list.
While I can’t confirm that none of these GoFundMe pages are fraudulent, for each one listed below, I did a bit of internet sleuthing to confirm that there is indeed a person that shares the name with the named person on the GoFundMe who lives in the area described by the GoFundMe post.
For many of those that I’ve included, when there is an image of the homeowner on the GoFundMe, I was able to find a different photo of them confirming their identity. I know a scammer could do the same, and source multiple photos etc., but this provides at least some level of vetting for anyone who’s hesitant to donate for fear of scammers. In many cases I was able to find active social media for those who have lost their homes where they’ve posted the link—really the only incontrovertible proof there is in this case.

There is obviously a massive gulf between 30% and 100% and all of the below GoFundMes deserve full funding, but I’m trying to make it easier for viewers to find those most in need since this list is extremely long and can be quite overwhelming.
